Coaching skills workshop: empowering school staff with practical skills to help young people build resilience

Jennifer, Director of Pastoral Care at a large boarding school, had seen a significant increase in the number of pupils with anxiety-related issues because of the pandemic. Even though the more extreme issues (for example, eating disorders and self-harm) were being referred directly to the counselling team, other issues (such as anxiety about exams, getting into university, securing a job, and managing friends and family relationships) needed teaching staff support to avoid issues escalating.

My one-day workshop was designed to equip boarding and teaching staff with the skills to help pupils manage stress and build their resilience.

This interactive online workshop covered the underlying science of the symptoms. The majority of the time was spent introducing and practising evidenced-based techniques to help young people manage anxiety, find new perspectives and re-frame their experience. Staff left with three different techniques that they felt confident enough to use with pupils experiencing emotional distress.

“I found the whole day helpful as it gave me a chance to think about this subject in ways that I had not previously considered. It was good to cover the theory. but even better to have practical strategies to work with. I learned about hands-on techniques that I can introduce right away - great practical steps to use in the future.”
